We met up with Long Way Down Bikers Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman in Cape TownThe motorcycle journey of a lifetime has reached its epic conclusion. After spending three months travelling the Long Way Down through Europe and Africa, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have concluded their 15,000 mile adventure on a beach in Milnerton South Africa in front of the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain.(more images of Ewan and Charley coming on monday)Ewan and Charley arrived on their motorbikes at the Milnerton Lagoon Beach Hotel in Cape Town accompanied by a cavalcade of local bikers, looking surprisingly good considering the journey that they had just undertaken.Jovial and friendly they joked with the crowd before popping champagne magnums on the beach and in good “race end” style they soaked themselves and the media with bubbly. “We made it” shouted an ecstatic Charley Boorman.Since they began in May 2007 in John O’Groats, Scotland, they have ridden their bikes through eighteen countries, including Libya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Rwanda. They have encountered some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth and negotiated blinding sandstorms, searing temperatures, dodgy border crossings and extreme riding conditions.Ewan and Charley spent 3 months planning the expedition, deciding which countries they should visit and preparing the bikes for the ride. It was important to Ewan and Charley that they explored parts of Africa that are less travelled including western Ethiopia near the Eritrean border, Gulu in northern Uganda and western Tanzania close to the shores of lake Tanganyika.Source: www.capetownmagazine.com

Virgin Atlantic Help Deliver Vital Medical Support to Kenyan Communities

Sir Richard Branson, President of Virgin Atlantic, today delivered the first batch of motorcycles that will help to bring much-needed medical support to small villages and communities in Kenya and throughout Africa. The money for the motorcycles was raised by customers contributing to Virgin Atlantic’s onboard charity appeal and by staff who took part in a wide range of fundraising events over the past year. The money was then donated to support the work of the charity Riders for Health, which was selected by Virgin Group’s charitable arm Virgin Unite. Riders for Health has been working in Africa for 17 years and will buy and maintain the motorcycles. The motorcycles will enable a team of healthcare workers to provide rural communities with improved access to essential drugs and basic health services. Many of the suffering who need help live in remote areas and are often many miles away from the closest hospital or clinic. Each mobile health worker could potentially reach thousands of people each year, offering health education messages as well as vital medicines.Delivering the first of the 31 motorcycles in Kenya, Sir Richard was joined by two of the world’s most famous bikers ? actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ? who are themselves currently raising money for Riders for Health through their own iconic adventure, traveling the Long Way Down through Europe and Africa.Source: www.v-flyer.com

Underwear firm apologises to McGregor

Australian underwear firm has had to backtrack on claims that it sold manhood-enhancing briefs to actor Ewan McGregor.AussieBum now says it’s not true that the Scottish actor bought a huge order of Wonderjocks, described as a wonderbra for men.AussieBum owner Sean Ashby claimed the ‘Long Way Round’ star had purchased a huge order of the underwear, which is designed to “lift and promote” a man’s crotch area, in an interview last week. And according to McGregor’s publicist, the Aussie entrepreneur immediately regretted going public about his celebrity patron. She states, “AussieBum has written an apology to us over it, it is not true at all.”The company has now acknowledged the McGregor story was incorrect, but confirmed the actor had bought other styles of AussieBum pants, according to the Sydney Daily Telegraph.A spokesman tells the publication, “He’s a fan of the brand generally and has bought several different items from the range, but certainly not the Wonderjock. “Given his reputation, we doubt very much there would be a need for this.” Source: www.rte.ie
