Star gazing at the 2007 TIFF

By: W. Andrew PowellThe 32nd Toronto International Film Festival made its big announcement today, revealing all of the over 500 international guests, stars, and filmmakers who are expected to make an appearance this year. Every year the list seems to grow and grow, and Hollywood seems to make an ever-increasing rush to be in town during the event.Whether you’re in Toronto to see films at the festival, just want to catch sight of a few celebrities, or you just live here, September is always a good time star gaze.Once again there are also a multitude of stars who will be returning to the festival after visiting in the past (It’s actually harder these days to figure out who hasn’t been at the festival before). Some of our personal favorites expected to return this year are: Brad Pitt, Ewan McGregor, Clive Owen, Charlize Theron, George Clooney, Sigourney Weaver, and Samuel L. Jackson… just to name a few.Source: www.thegate.ca

McGregor ends 15,000-mile charity challenge

By Adam ForrestIT WAS a trek featuring some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth, but two men on motorbikes have finally reached their journey’s end. After spending three months travelling through Europe and Africa, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman concluded their 15,000-mile adventure from Scotland to South Africa, celebrating in Cape Town yesterday against the spectacular backdrop of Table mountain.Since they began in May in John O’Groats, the intrepid duo have ridden through 18 countries, including Libya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Rwanda. Along the way they encountered blinding sandstorms, searing temperatures, dodgy border crossings and armies of ants.advertisementBut, despite the extreme riding conditions, McGregor insisted the trip, the successor to their BBC series Long Way Round, had been well worthwhile. “Long Way Down has been an amazing journey and it has been a real privilege to be able to experience these diverse and beautiful places,” he said.”We’ve had the opportunity to see such different ways of life to ours and have travelled to remote places very few people have access to. The sense of freedom and exploration has been incredible.”Boorman admitted the gruelling odyssey had involved some difficult moments. “There have been times when it has been unbelievably hard-going,” he said. “But that has been countered by amazing riding and extraordinary people.Source: www.sundayherald.com

It’s a great feeling and a real privilege to have achieved our goal.”We’ve had the opportunity to see such different ways of life to ours and have travelled to remote places very few people have access to. The sense of freedom and exploration has been incredible.”Boorman added: “We were both up for an adventure and Africa has certainly given us that. There have been times when it has been unbelievably hard going but that has been countered by amazing riding and extraordinary people.”The intrepid pair were followed on every mile of their journey by a documentary camera crew.”From sandstorms to floods, mosquitos to rhinoceroses we’ve encountered everything on Long Way Down,” said film-maker Russ Malkin. The journey will be shown in a BBC2 series this autumn.Source: news.scotsman.com

They have encountered some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth and negotiated blinding sandstorms, searing temperatures, dodgy border crossings and extreme riding conditions.Ewan and Charley spent 3 months planning the expedition, deciding which countries they should visit and preparing the bikes for the ride. It was important to Ewan and Charley that they explored parts of Africa that are less travelled including western Ethiopia near the Eritrean border, Gulu in northern Uganda and western Tanzania close to the shores of lake Tanganyika.Source: www.capetownmagazine.com
